Tips for getting started with large payments

Sending a large amount of money can feel like a big step, especially the first time. These tips will help you plan ahead so your payment goes through smoothly.

Before you start

  • Your Send account needs to be active.
  • Have your identity and any supporting documents ready (for example, payslips, bank statements, or a contract of sale).
  • Know roughly when you want the money to arrive and which currency you're sending.
  • Contact our customer service team if you're not sure whether a maximum limit applies to your currency.

Step 1: Get in touch with our customer service team

For larger payments, the easiest way to start is to speak with us first. Our team can:

  • Talk through your payment and the next steps with you.
  • Let you know what information or documents we may need.
  • Help you plan the timing of your payment.

Step 2: Get your documents ready in advance

For some larger payments, we may ask for additional information about the source of your funds. This helps us meet our obligations under Australian law.

  • Contact our customer service team early so we can help you prepare any documents ahead of time.
  • For more on what we may ask for, see What documents might I need for a large Payment?.
  • For more on why, see Why do I need to prove where my money comes from?.

Step 3: Plan around timing

Payment timing can vary depending on:

  • The currency and destination
  • Currency cut-off times
  • Weekends and public holidays in the sending or receiving country
  • Banking partners and any checks we need to complete

For general timeframes, see How long will my payment take? If you have questions about timing for your specific payment, contact our customer service team.

Step 4: Tell your recipient to expect the funds

Letting your recipient know in advance helps avoid the receiving bank holding or asking questions about the deposit.

  • Share the amount, currency, and roughly when the money will arrive.
  • Make sure the recipient details you've entered (name, account number, bank details) match exactly what their bank has on file.

Step 5: Ask us about exchange rates before you book

Exchange rates move with the market. If you have questions about exchange rates before booking your Payment, contact our customer service team.

Step 6: Keep your account secure

What happens next

  • Our customer service team can guide you through the steps of your payment.
  • Payments may be subject to compliance review before funds are sent. We may ask for more information or documents where required under our compliance and legal obligations.
  • If we need anything from you, a task will appear in your Send portal, or we'll contact you directly using the email or phone number on your account.
  • Processing time can vary depending on the currency, destination, banking partners, cut-off times, and any checks we need to complete.

Common questions

How quickly can my Payment be sent?

Payment timing can vary depending on the currency, destination, cut-off times, banking partners, and any checks we need to complete. Get in touch with our customer service team as early as possible so we can talk you through what to expect.

The exchange rate moved while I was getting ready.

Exchange rates move with the market, so the rate you see can change before you book your Payment. If you have questions about rates before booking, contact our customer service team.

My bank is holding or blocking my payment to Send.

Some banks flag larger outbound Payments as a security check. It can help to let your own bank know in advance that you're sending funds to Send. If you need a hand, contact our customer service team.

How will I know if you need anything from me?

If we need more information, a task will appear in your Send portal. Our customer service team will also be in touch using the contact details on your account.

I'm sending a property settlement or superannuation payment.

If your Payment relates to a property settlement or superannuation, contact our customer service team early. Our team can support and guide you through the process and documentation requirements.

Is there a minimum amount for my transfer?

There is generally no minimum amount for payments or trades in major currencies. For some exotic currencies, a minimum amount may apply because of the banks and providers we work with to complete the trade. If you're planning to send an exotic currency, contact our customer service team and we'll confirm any minimum that applies.
