Can I use my bank statement as a source of funds?
Sometimes. A bank statement may be accepted, but only when it is listed as an accepted option on your task and it clearly supports the source of funds you selected. In cases where your source of funds isn’t solely savings, we’ll also need other documents to confirm where the funds came from.
Before you start
- A "Verify source of funds" task should be active in your Send portal.
- You'll need to have already chosen where your money came from in the earlier "Provide source of funds" task.
- Your task page lists the documents we may accept for your specific request. Read it carefully before uploading.
The short answer
A bank statement is not a one-size-fits-all document. Whether it's accepted depends on the source of funds you've selected and what your task is asking for.
A bank statement may, depending on the request, help support:
- Savings - a bank statement dated within the last 3 months from the date of upload.
- Employment income - a bank transfer or statement showing the receipt of income, with your employer's name clearly visible in the 'Sender' or 'Description' field. Your task may also accept a payslip or pension slip (issued within the last 12 months), a tax declaration, a letter from your employer confirming salary, or a work contract.
- Income from investments - a bank statement reflecting credit of the amount from a particular source. Your task may also accept a dividends statement, a statement from your investment manager or provider, an investment certificate or portfolio, or a tax declaration.
- Gambling or lottery wins - this typically needs evidence from the gambling platform, organised tournament, or a Lotteries Commission, TAB, or Casino voucher confirming the win, along with a corresponding bank statement clearly showing the receipt of funds and current account balance.
- Legal settlement - this typically needs a court order, or written confirmation of settlement signed by the advocate or solicitor, along with a bank statement clearly showing the receipt of funds and current account balance.
- Gifts - this typically needs proof of transfer from the donor (which may be a bank statement showing their full legal name and current address), a signed gift letter, and a proof of identity document for the donor (for example, a passport or driver's licence). The gift letter should include the donor's full name, your relationship to the donor, the amount of the gift, the reason for the gift, a clear statement that the gift is not a loan and does not require repayment, and dates and signatures from both parties. For larger gifts, we may also need evidence of where the donor's funds originally came from.
If a bank statement isn't listed as an accepted option for your task, it's unlikely to be enough on its own. Always follow the document options shown on your task, and contact our support team if you're unsure.
How to check that your bank statement will be accepted.
Step 1: Open your "Verify source of funds" task
Open your task list in the Send portal and select the Verify source of funds task. The task page will show the documents we may accept for your selected source of funds.

Step 2: Check what your bank statement needs to show
If a bank statement is one of the accepted options for your source, your statement must clearly display:
- Your full name as the account holder.
- The bank's name and logo.
- Your account number.
- The statement date or period.
- The dates, amounts, and descriptions of the transactions that match the source of funds you've selected (for example, salary payments from your employer, the winnings being credited, or settlement funds being received).
Some sources of funds also have a recency requirement. For example, a savings bank statement may need to be dated within the last 3 months from the date you upload it. Your task will tell you if this applies.
Please don't black out or hide the account holder name, bank name, account number, statement date, or the transaction details. We may not be able to accept the statement if these aren't clearly visible.
A clean PDF download from your internet banking is usually best.
Step 3: Upload your statement
Follow the on-screen instructions in the task to upload your file. For accepted file types and sizes, see Accepted documents and file sizes.

What happens next
- Our team will review your document and let you know the outcome.
- If we need anything else, we'll create a follow-up task in your portal asking for more information or a different document.
- Depending on the request, additional documents may be needed before the review can be completed.
Common questions
My bank statement isn't listed as an accepted document for my task.
Different sources of funds need different proof. If a bank statement isn't listed for your task, it's unlikely to be enough on its own. Follow the document options shown on your task, or contact our support team if you don't have what's listed.
My statement is in a joint name, a business name, or someone else's name.
A joint statement may be accepted where you are named as an account holder. If the account is held by a business or another person, we may need evidence of your relationship to the account, your authority or ownership, and where the funds originated. If we need any further information to complete the review, we'll reach out to you.
Can I hide some of the information on my statement?
Please don't hide the account holder name, bank name, account number, statement date, or any of the transactions that prove your source of funds. We may not be able to accept the statement if these aren't clearly visible. If you have concerns about sharing a document, contact our support team.
My statement was rejected, or you've asked for more information.
This can happen if the document is unclear, doesn't show the details we need, or doesn't fully cover the source of funds you selected. Check the new task in your portal for what's required and upload a fresh copy. For more help, see Why do I need to prove where my money comes from?.
