Why do I need a tax code?

When adding a new recipient in certain countries, you may be asked to provide their local tax identification number. Because different countries use different names for this code, the field name will adapt to match the recipient's country. This article explains where to enter it and what to do if you're unsure.

Before you start

  • The tax code belongs to your recipient, not you.
  • Each country uses its own name for the tax code (for example, CPF in Brazil or CUIL in Argentina). The field on the page will show the name used in your recipient's country.
  • You'll only be asked for a tax code where it's required for that recipient setup. If it's needed, the field will appear automatically when you add the recipient.

How to provide a tax identification number.

Step 1: Start adding a new recipient

  • Sign in to your Send account.
  • Go to Recipients and select Add new recipient.
  • Choose the country and currency you want to send to.

Step 2: Enter the recipient's tax information

  • On the Add a new recipient page, you'll enter the recipient's full legal name or registered business name.
  • If a tax code is required, the field will appear with the name used in the recipient's country (for example "CPF" for Brazil or "CUIL" for Argentina).
  • Enter the tax code exactly as shown on the recipient's official documents.
  • Double-check the format before saving. We can confirm the field is filled in, but we cannot verify the number itself is correct.

Step 3: Save the recipient

  • Once all required fields are completed, select Save.
  • If a tax code is required and not provided, you may not be able to complete the recipient setup.

What happens next

  • Your recipient is saved and ready to use for international transfers.
  • We collect this information for processing the transaction and meeting our legal obligations. You can view our Privacy Policy on our website.
  • If the tax code is wrong or doesn't match the recipient's records, the payment may be delayed while our team carries out additional checks.
  • You don't need to do anything else unless we contact you.
  • If your payment hasn't moved within the expected timeframe and you haven't heard from us, please contact our support team.

Tax codes we may ask for

The name of the tax code depends on the recipient's country. Some examples:

  • Argentina - Código Único de Identificación Laboral (CUIL) or Cadastro Nacional de Pessoas (CNPJ)
  • Brazil - Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas (CPF)
  • Chile - Rol Único Nacional (RUN)
  • Colombia - Cédulas (CTC number)
  • Peru - Documento Nacional de Identidad (DNI) or Carné de Extranjería (Foreign Registration Card / FRC)
  • Republic of Korea - Resident Registration Number
  • Vietnam - Tax Identification Number (TIN)

This list can change as local laws are updated. When a tax code is needed, the correct field will appear automatically while you add the recipient.

Common questions

I don't know my recipient's tax code

  • The tax code is issued by the tax authority in your recipient's country. It's usually found on official tax documents, payslips, invoices, or government-issued ID.
  • Your recipient is the best person to provide it. They can look it up or request it from their local tax authority.
  • If a tax code is required, you won't be able to save the recipient without it, so it's worth asking before you start the transfer.

The field won't accept my number

  • Check that you've entered the number exactly as shown on the recipient's official documents, including any letters, dashes, or leading zeros.
  • Remove any extra spaces.
  • If the recipient is a business, make sure you're using the business tax number, not a personal one.
  • If it still won't save, contact our support team.

Why do you need this?
