How long does a large payment take?

Send handles international payments of all sizes. Payment size doesn’t usually affect processing speed, but this article breaks down typical timelines and the few factors that can cause a delay.

Before you start

Make sure that:

  • Your Send account is active and you are logged in.
  • Your recipient has been added and verified. See, How long does it take to verify my recipient?
  • You know which currency you are sending and which currency your recipient will receive.
  • You have planned how you will fund your wallet, and roughly when those funds will arrive.

Step 1: Know the typical timing

Payments are typically received within 24 - 48 hours. Some transactions can even be received within the first 24 hours, depending on currency, destination, banking partners, and other factors (such as cut-off times and compliance checks).

The size of your payment does not change these typical timings. The same secure process applies whether you are sending a small payment or a large international transfer. For more on safety, see Is it safe to send large amounts with Send?.

How long your payment takes depends on the type of payment. There are three main types:

  • International transfers (with currency conversion)
Sending money to a recipient overseas, usually with a currency conversion (for example, AUD to USD).
Usually within 1-2 business days. Some destination countries or banks may take a little longer.
  • Local payments (same currency, same country)
Sending money in the same currency to a recipient in the same country (for example, AUD to an Australian bank account).
Usually within a few hours on a business day.
  • Wallet to wallet transfers
Moving money between two of your own Send wallets in the same currency.
Usually within 90 minutes to a few hours on a business day.

Step 2: Fund your wallet in time

Your payment can only be released once your wallet has enough money in it. For larger amounts, please keep in mind:

  • Your own bank may have daily transfer limits that prevent you from sending the full amount in one go. You may need to arrange a higher limit with your bank in advance.
  • International funding can take longer to arrive than local funding, depending on where the money is coming from.

Step 3: Watch for any messages in the Send portal

When you start a large payment, Send may display a message and send an email asking you to submit a task before continuing. If you see this:

  • Follow the instructions on screen, for more information see, How to submit a task.
  • If you need any help, call our support team using the details below.
  • We will help you understand the next steps so your payment can move forward smoothly.

Step 4: Track your payment in your Send account

Once your payment is on its way, you'll see one of these statuses next to it in your Send account:

  • Pending - We have received your instruction and are completing the required checks. Your payment will stay in Pending if your wallet does not yet have enough available balance to send it. Please check your available balance and top up if needed to keep things moving.
  • Sent - The payment has left Send and is on its way to your recipient's bank.

For more detail on payment statuses and timing, see How long will my payment take?.

What happens next

Payment times can vary and are not guaranteed. How long your payment takes depends on factors such as:

  • The currencies involved and the destination country.
  • When your wallet is funded.
  • The recipient's bank and any intermediary banks.
  • Banking cut-off times, weekends and public holidays.
  • Any checks or information we may need to complete.

A few important things to keep in mind:

  • Business days only - Banks typically do not process payments on weekends or public holidays in either country. A payment booked late in the day may not move until the next business day.
  • Receiving bank timing - After Send has released your payment, the recipient's bank still needs to process it before the money lands in their account. These timeframes are set by the receiving bank’s processes and outside of Send’s control.
  • Intermediary or receiving bank fees - The recipient's bank or any intermediary bank may deduct fees that are outside Send's control. As a result, the recipient may receive less than the amount sent.
  • Tasks and information requests - If we need more information or documents to complete the required checks, your payment may be delayed and may not proceed until the review is completed. See, Why do I have to provide information or documents to make a payment? for more information.

You can track the payment status at any time in your Send account.

Common questions

Is there a limit on how much I can send?

  • The minimum amount you can send through the Send portal is AUD $250.
  • The maximum amount varies from account to account.
  • If you receive an alert in the portal that your amount is too high, or if you need to send less than AUD $250, please contact our customer service team and we'll help you complete your payment.

I'm planning a large transfer - what's the best way to prepare?

  • Add and verify your recipient in advance. See, How long does it take to verify my recipient?
  • Check your own bank's daily transfer limits before you book.
  • Have your funding method ready so you can fund your wallet quickly once the trade is booked.
  • If you'd like to talk through your transfer first, please contact our support team.

My bank won't let me transfer the full amount to fund my wallet

  • Many banks apply daily transfer limits on outgoing payments.
  • Check your sending bank's limits and, if needed, arrange a temporary limit increase with them.

The app is asking me to call support before I can continue

  • For some payments, Send will ask you to speak with our support team before the payment can continue.
  • Please call us using the details below and we'll explain the next steps.

My large payment is taking longer than I expected

  • Check the payment status in your Send account. If it shows Sent, the payment has left Send and is with the receiving bank.
  • If the payment is taking longer than our standard processing time to arrive with your recipient, please contact our support team and we can investigate.
  • Please note, weekends and public holidays in your country or your recipient's country may also cause a delay.
